Ballpark Brat Pizza

Ballpark Brat Pizza - Bring your favorite ballpark food home with this grilled pizza topped with bratwurst, sauteed peppers and onions, smoked cheddar cheese and mustard! | foxeslovelemons.com

My husband LOVES making pizza – he grills it in the summer, bakes it in the winter, and comes up with a new flavor combo each time. In this monthly “guest post,” I’m going to sit back, relax, and maybe take the occasional photo while Jeff makes me a pizza and tells you about it. Here he is:

The unofficial beginning of summer here in the Detroit area is Opening Day for the Tigers. For 7 months, people flock downtown to watch our 3-time defending AL Central champs. It is all about sitting in the sun, enjoying a cold beer, and chatting with friends and family. In my opinion, there are only two types of food to be had at the ballpark – roasted peanuts and bratwurst. Seeing as how I can’t really make a roasted peanut pizza, I tried to bring the summer baseball experience home with this ballpark brat pizza.

Most of ingredients for this pizza came from Door to Door Organics (find our full rundown of the service HERE). The thing I love about DTDO is that they have a lot of locally made organic products like pizza sauce from Local Folks Foods, as well as the Eastern Market Bratwurst from Corridor Sausage I used for this recipe. These pork sausages are some of the best I have eaten. Couple that with some fresh produce like sautéed and bell peppers, and you have the essence of that ballpark brat flavor.

Ballpark Brat Pizza

Ingredients:

  • 3 bratwurst links

  • 1-1/2 tablespoons olive oil

  • 1 green bell pepper, thinly sliced

  • 1 red bell pepper, thinly sliced

  • 1 small yellow onion, thinly sliced

  • 1 ball of pizza dough, store-bought or homemade

  • 1/2 cup pizza sauce

  • 1/3 cup shredded smoked cheddar cheese

  • 2 tablespoons chopped fresh parsley

  • Yellow mustard, for serving

Directions:

  1. Preheat outdoor grill for direct grilling over medium-low heat. Transfer bratwurst to grill; cook 8 to 10 minutes or until internal temperature reaches 145 degrees F, turning occasionally. Transfer brats to cutting board; leave grill on. Let brats stand 5 minutes before cutting into 1/4-inch-thick slices.

  2. Meanwhile, heat oil in large skillet over medium heat. Add bell peppers and onion; cook 6 to 8 minutes or until softened, stirring occasionally.

  3. Grill pizza dough according to Grilled Pizza Tutorial, adjusting grill accordingly. Alternatively, pizza crust can be baked in oven according to package directions.

  4. Once dough is almost cooked through, move to indirect heat and top with pizza sauce, cheese, sliced brats and sauteed peppers and onions. Cook until toppings are warmed through and crust is fully cooked.

  5.  Sprinkle pizza with parsley; slice and serve immediately with mustard for drizzling.
