Deluxe Pizza Burgers #SundaySupper

Deluxe Pizza Burgers - Hamburger patties full of pepperoni and chopped mushrooms, topped with grilled green pepper rings, gooey mozzarella and savory pizza sauce.

First, a little announcement: I just launched my “Resources” page! It can always be found up there in the right corner, under the pile of lemons. This is an EPIC guide to the tools I use to cook all the food you see here on Foxes Love Lemons, as well as the equipment I use to photograph it. Take a virtual tour of my kitchen cabinets and poke around.

Happy Sunday! I hope you’ve had a good Labor Day weekend so far. Mine has been spent having dinner with friends, going to the farmer’s market, and spending a day riding roller coasters and drinking frozen lemonades at Cedar Point.

Today’s #SundaySupper, hosted by DB @ Crazy Foodie Stunts is all about what we like to cook for Labor Day. To be honest, I don’t cook much on holiday weekends. It’s all about relaxation, so if I do end up cooking, there’s some requirements 1.) It has to be a complete meal, all in one dish, 2.) It should require absolute minimal effort, 3.) Taste great (obviously), and 4.) It should probably be done on the grill (that way I can make my husband grill it while I continue to relax).

These Deluxe Pizza Burgers should fit the bill in all of those categories. They’re based on a dish my mom made when I was a kid, updated to taste like the world’s most glorious pizza combination: pepperoni, mushrooms and green pepper. The pepperoni and mushrooms are blended right into the hamburger, the pepper is quickly grilled while the burger is cooking away, and everything is topped with gooey mozzarella and savory pizza sauce.

Deluxe Pizza Burgers

Yield: 4 servings

Deluxe Pizza Burgers

  • 1-1/4 pounds ground round
  • 4 ounces sauteed or canned mushrooms, roughly chopped3 ounces pepperoni, roughly chopped
  • 2 teaspoons dried oregano
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 4 (1/-2 thick) slices of green bell pepper
  • 4 slices mozzarella cheese
  • 3/4 cup prepared pizza sauce
  • 4 hamburger buns

  1. Preheat grill for direct grilling over medium-high heat. In large bowl, combine beef, mushrooms, pepperoni, oregano and garlic powder. Form into four patties, being careful not to overwork the meat.
  2. Place burgers on hot grill rack. Cover and cook 10 minutes or until internal temperature reaches 135 degrees F for medium rare doneness, turning once (flip very carefully – they’re sort of fragile!) During last three minutes of cooking, place green pepper on grill rack, and top burgers with cheese slices. Cook pepper just until slightly softened; cook burgers until cheese melts.
  3. Meanwhile, place pizza sauce in microwave safe bowl; cover and microwave 45 seconds or until hot. Serve burgers on buns, topped with green pepper and pizza sauce.

    • Lori | Foxes Love Lemons

      Thanks so much, Alida!

  • Suzanne

    Wow does that look good!!!

    • Lori | Foxes Love Lemons

      Thanks Suzanne!

  • Liz

Lori, your burgers look terrific! I need to get more creative…these have me drooling :)

    • Lori | Foxes Love Lemons

Thank you, Liz. I figure, what’s the worst that can happen when you get creative with a burger? You’ll still be eating a burger, after all :)

  • Sarah R

I am LOVING this combo of flavours. Wish I had burgers like this growing up!

    • Lori | Foxes Love Lemons

Thanks Sarah! I have to admit, the ones my mom made weren’t quite as deluxe ;)

  • Paula @ Vintage Kitchen

Easy, all in one recipes are perfect for holidays. Who want to slave away in the kitchen right? Mmm… this burger is a good way to say goodbye to summer Lori!

    • Lori | Foxes Love Lemons

Thanks so much, Paula! And I kept my promise – I spend only about 15 minutes cooking this weekend!

  • Jen @JuanitasCocina

I would have a hard time sharing these.

    • Lori | Foxes Love Lemons

That’s why you make it, eat it and blog about it when nobody else is around. Mua ha ha ;)

  • Lynn Chen

Can’t believe I’ve lived my entire life without a pizza burger.

    • Lori | Foxes Love Lemons

Oh no! Fire up the grill :)

  • Renee Dobbs

Chopped pepperoni in the beef for the burger – I think you just changed my life. Oh yea, I’m sure of it.

    • Lori | Foxes Love Lemons

I will admit – this mainly came about because I had some leftover pepperoni hanging around in the freezer. I think it was a pretty solid solution to that “problem.” haha.

  • Chef Di

Oh yum!!! I’m all over that ooey gooey cheese! Fanastic recipe, and love the new look of the blog, too!!! :-)

    • Lori | Foxes Love Lemons

      Thanks so much, Di!

  • Shannon

What a great burger! Love the flavors!!

  • Kathia Rodriguez

that green pepper looks so shy in the burger :)

    • Lori | Foxes Love Lemons

Haha, really? I feel like that green pepper is about to eat the rest of the burger! I didn’t realize it was such a HUGE slice until I looked at the photos :)

  • cupcakekalechip

My husband and three year old would adore these. Me too, but them especially!

    • Lori | Foxes Love Lemons

Awww – what husband and kid wouldn’t like a pizza combined with a burger, right? Thanks so much.

  • Courtney @ Neighborfood

I love the look of that giant slice of green pepper! And my favorite pizza combo is sausage, mushrooms, and pepper, so I would love this with a little sausage in the ground beef. Great idea! Also realized I forgot to tell you I love the new site design! Looks lovely!

    • Lori | Foxes Love Lemons

Oh yeah – a little spicy Italian sausage mixed in with the ground beef? That would be SO good! Thanks so much, Courtney.

  • Soni

Lovely looking burgers with lovely flavors! Love the grilled pepper idea too! Yumm :)

    • Lori | Foxes Love Lemons

      Thanks Soni!

  • Kim

I love that thick slice of pepper on top! Pepper and onion pizza is one of my faves. :D I bet it’s delicious in burger form.

    • Lori | Foxes Love Lemons

Seems like we have a lot of like-minded pizza folks in #SS! We should all get together for a pizza party :)

      • Kim

        I’m down with that!

  • Cindys Recipes

I’d love a big bite of that burger right now! I know its 6:00 am , don’t judge! lol

    • Lori | Foxes Love Lemons

Oh, it’s a no judgement zone around here, Cindy. That’s the thing about reading food blogs – your stomach doesn’t care what time it is!!

  • littleredkitchen

A delicious looking burger and the green pepper on top is calling out to me.

    • Lori | Foxes Love Lemons
