Sausage, Corn & Cherry Pizza with Goat Cheese

Sausage, Corn & Cherry Pizza with Goat Cheese - A unique pizza with a combination of savory and sweet flavors. |

My husband LOVES making pizza – he grills it in the summer, bakes it in the winter, and comes up with a new flavor combo each time. In this monthly “guest post,” I’m going to sit back, relax, and maybe take the occasional photo while Jeff makes me a pizza and tells you about it. Here he is:

The other day, I was thinking about some of the best things that come out of Michigan during the summer and autumn seasons. I thought of sweet corn, grown by farmers in Northern Michigan, and a staple of family dinner tables. I thought of going to Detroit’s Eastern Market for delicious sausage from the massive butcher shop across Gratiot Avenue. And, last but not least, the cherries grown near Traverse City that have inspired an entire festival in their honor. This pizza truly is an ode to all of these yummy things that Michiganders get to experience this time of year. I hope you find it tasty too!

Most of the ingredients for this Sausage, Corn & Cherry Pizza with Goat Cheese came from Door to Door Organics (find our full rundown of the service HERE). The best thing about DTDO is the combination of locally-made grocery items and organic vegetables. Along with the awesome ingredients mentioned above, DTDO has amazing Zingerman’s goat cheese which was silky yet firm enough to crumble onto the top of the pizza.

Sausage, Corn & Cherry Pizza with Goat Cheese

  • 2 tablespoons olive oil, divided
  • Kernels from two ears of corn
  • 1 shallot, thinly sliced
  • 8 medium button mushrooms, thinly sliced
  • 4 links of apple and sage-flavored sausage (the ones we used were bratwurst-sized), sliced 1/2-inch thick
  • 1 ball of pizza dough, store-bought or homemade
  • 1/2 cup basil pesto
  • 1/4 cup dried cherries
  • 4 ounces crumbled goat cheese

  1. In large skillet, heat 1 tablespoon oil over medium-high heat. Add corn kernels and shallot; cook 4 to 6 minutes or until vegetables are tender, stirring frequently. Transfer vegetables to small bowl.
  2. Add remaining 1 tablespoon oil, mushrooms and sausage to skillet. Cook 4 to 6 minutes or until sausage is fully cooked, stirring frequently. Transfer sausage and mushrooms to small bowl.
  3. Grill pizza dough according to Grilled Pizza Tutorial, pre-heating and adjusting grill accordingly. Alternatively, pizza dough can be baked in oven according to package directions.
  4. Once the pizza dough is firm and has nice grill marks, remove from grill and spread with pesto. Top with cherries, cheese, corn mixture and sausage mixture.
  5. Transfer pizza back to grill; cook until toppings are warmed through and crust is fully cooked.

  1. Damn, I want a few bites of those apple and sage pork sausages! Hell, the entire pizza (sans goat cheese) is calling my name. Nice job, Jeff. I commend you on your superior pizza making skills and am impressed that you make them all year long. If you wouldn’t mind freezing a few and sending them my way, I’d really appreciate it 😉

    • Thanks!  Happy to dream up new and interesting pizzas.  I really liked the flavor of this one – it actually made me think of it as a quintessential Michigan pizza (between the cherries, sweet corn, and sausage).

  2. The pizza posts have finally gotten to me.  This one has an incredible combination of flavors, and would be well worth making, even for this mostly non-eater of pizza.

    • Glad I have converted you finally . . . Everything, and I mean everything, is better as a pizza.  It is just such a portable vehicle for flavors.
