Simple, yet special, original recipes.

Taste Trunk Review + Giveaway

When Taste Trunk asked if I would like to sample one of their curated monthly subscription boxes, I headed to their website and Facebook page to check it out.  Here’s how it works: first, you choose a theme – Gourmet, Health, Sweet or BBQ (you can even pick a different theme each month). Then, once a month, you receive a “trunk” full of 5 -10 hand-picked full-sized products. If it sounds pretty cool so far, you’ll have a chance to win a free trunk of your very own at the end of this post!

My trunk arrived beautifully packaged in a sturdy box. All of the items were wrapped in bubble wrap and then tissue paper, and finished off with a ribbon. There was also a small packet of cards included – the cards gave information about the companies that produced each product, as well as a recipe to make using each product.
Once I assessed the bounty, I realized it was like someone had gone shopping in a gourmet grocery store and picked out a bunch of treats just for me. It was like a birthday present from a far-away aunt with foodie sensibilities. I don’t have such a relative, but if I did, this is what she would send me.

The August Gourmet Trunk included:

  • Susan’s Gourmet Salsa Relish
  • The Jam Stand Drunken Monkey Jam
  • Iveta Gourmet Apricot Scone Mix
  • Cucina & Amore Sun-Dried Tomato Pesto
  • The Girl & The Fig Lavender Sea Salt
  • Two Snooty Chefs Kansas City Steak Seasoning

I absolutely loved the variety of flavors and purposes of the things in this box. Some could be eaten immediately out of the package, while another offered a fun baking project. One could be tossed with pasta to make a complete meal, and another could be turned into a party dip using the provided recipe. I was so inspired by all of these products that I got started using them right away.

I tossed the Sun-Dried Tomato Pesto with some cheese tortellini and crumbled Italian sausage that I had leftover from my sangria party. I topped it with a little fresh basil and Parmesan, and dinner was ready. The pesto had such a bold, fresh tomato flavor that really livened up something as boring as frozen cheese tortellini.

For a simple dessert, I spread a little Drunken Monkey Jam on some crackers. This stuff takes the cake for most unique jarred jam I’ve ever had. Full of roasted banana and rum flavor, it was great on crackers, but I bet it would be even better on pancakes. Or waffles. Or ice cream. Or as the J in a PB + J.  Or eaten with a spoon.

Next up, breakfast time. I whipped up a batch of scones using the Aveta mix, and they were wonderful. I actually didn’t even follow the instructions properly (I used buttermilk instead of cream because that’s what I had on hand), and they STILL turned out great. I loved that the cream/buttermilk was the only ingredient I needed to add (I didn’t even need an egg!). Everything was right there in the mix. These couldn’t have been simpler or tastier – slightly sweet with a great dried apricot flavor.

The final product I’ve had a chance to try so far is the Kansas City Steak seasoning. I whipped out the trusty cast iron skillet I inherited from my grandma, picked up a few New York strips, and sprinkled them with the seasoning. A quick sear later, I was enjoying a perfectly seasoned and flavored steak. I loved that this seasoning is the only ingredient you need to make a great steak, and the little tub of it is literally overflowing with the seasoning mix. It’s really packed in there, so you’ll be sprinkling dozens of steaks with this product!

All told, I’ve had a chance to try 4 of the 6 products I received in my Taste Trunk, and all of them were truly gourmet items that I would gladly buy again, given the chance. I think Taste Trunk would be great for any home cook that wants to embark on a new culinary adventure each month. It’s so much fun discovering new products, and coming up with ways to use them. These ingredients would really spice up any meal routine!

Those steaks were delicious. And, as you know, from previous guest posts – I like meat. I also enjoyed the drunken monkey jam. I could die happy with a dessert plate of crackers and various spreads – drunken monkey jam, speculoos spread, almond butter, and pumpkin butter.
