Why You Will Love These Football Sugar Cookies
- You can customize these for a certain team if you want! Instead of using rainbow nonpareil sprinkles, use nonpareils only in your team colors to fill the stands.
- The decorating is easier than it looks, so this recipe is great for bakers of all skill levels.
What You Will Need For These Football Cookies
A full recipe card, including exact ingredient amounts, appears at the bottom of this post. This section contains affiliate links.
- sugar cookie dough – We used 1 pack (17.5 ounces) of Betty Crocker Sugar Cookie Mix to make 15 (3.2-inch diameter) cookies. You can use any brand you want, or try a half batch of our sour cream sugar cookies (you will either need more icing and sprinkles, or you will have some plain cookies left over).
- cookie cutter – We ended up using a 3.2-inch cookie cutter from a set of ring molds similar to this one that we have. The exact size of the cookie isn’t so important. Anywhere around 3 inches is good!
- green cookie icing – you’ll need 2 pouches (7 ounces each) of ready-to-use cookie decorating icing. Most large grocery stores will carry it in individual colors.
- white cookie icing – you’ll need 1 pouch (7 ounces) of white icing.
- nonpareil sprinkles – you can use rainbow nonpareils for a generic Go Team! vibe, or choose specific color nonpareils based on what team you are cheering for.
- gold sphere sprinkles – you’ll want something like these gold sugar pearls for separating the “fans” from the “field” on these football sugar cookies.
- football sprinkles – We had a hard time finding footballs on their own, but you could use only the footballs from this sports sprinkle set, or just pick the footballs out of this football sprinkle mix.
How To Make And Decorate A Football Cookie
1. BAKE. Make the cookie dough, roll it out and use a 3.2-inch round cookie cutter to cut the cookies out. Bake on a baking sheet according to the package or recipe instructions, then allow the cookies to fully cool before decorating.
2. GREEN FROSTING. Pipe a thin line of green icing around the rim of each cookie, then flood the center of the cookie completely with more green icing.
3. SPRINKLES. Before the icing sets, place a line of the gold sugar pearls down the center of each cookie, then sprinkle the entire top half of each cookie with the nonpareils. Do the gold sprinkles and nonpareils on all of the cookies, and allow the cookies to set, before going on to the next step.
4. FINISH. Pipe a thin line of white icing vertically down the center of the bottom half of each cookie. Then, pipe two angled lines on each side of the center line. Place a football sprinkle in the center of the middle line. Allow the cookies to set before serving.

Tailgate Cookies Home Chef Tips
- When using the pouches of green cookie icing, cut a very small tip first to do the rim of all of the cookies, THEN cut a larger tip to flood the center of the cookies.
- Plan for setting time, because the cookies need to set after the sprinkles are put in place, then again after the yard lines and footballs are added.
How To Store Football Stadium Cookies
Store decorated cookies in an airtight container at room temperature for 4 to 5 days. When storing, place parchment paper between layers to prevent football cookies from sticking together.
