Panera Agave Lemonade, At Home, And Better

If you like Panera agave lemonade, this homemade version gives you that same citrusy refreshment, but with two important upgrades.

First, even though Panera calls theirs agave lemonade, it also contains regular sugar, which is worth knowing if you’re ordering it, because the word “agave” makes it sound like agave is doing all the work.

This homemade agave lemonade skips the refined sugar completely. After testing it both ways, we preferred the all-agave version. It tastes smoother and cleaner, and you don’t have to bother with making simple syrup.

Second, Panera uses lemon juice only. We add fresh lime juice, too. It doesn’t make the drink taste like limeade. It just makes the citrus brighter and more interesting. The result is a 5-minute homemade lemonade with fresh citrus flavor, balanced sweetness and no simple syrup required.

Why You Will Love Agave Lemonade

  • It is sweetened entirely with agave nectar, with no refined white sugar added.
  • Agave dissolves right into cold liquid, so there is no need to make simple syrup.
  • It takes 5 minutes and only 3 ingredients plus water.
  • The sweetness is easy to adjust depending on how tart your lemons and limes are.

  • fresh lemon juice – this gives the lemonade its classic tart, bright flavor. Freshly squeezed lemon juice is worth it here because there are so few ingredients.
  • fresh lime juice – this is what makes our lemonade with agave different from Panera’s. The lime does not take over, but it adds a sharper, more layered citrus flavor.
  • agave nectar – agave nectar (sometimes labeled agave syrup) sweetens the lemonade without refined sugar. It is thinner than honey and dissolves easily, even in cold liquid, which means no gritty sugar at the bottom of the pitcher.
  • water – water dilutes the citrus and agave into something refreshing and drinkable. Use cold water if you plan to serve the lemonade right away.

Lemonade Agave Home Chef Tips

  • Roll the lemons and limes firmly on the counter before cutting them to help release more juice.
  • Taste the lemonade before serving. Citrus can vary a lot, so add a little more agave if your fruit is extra tart.
  • Garnish each glass with a sprig of mint for a pretty presentation.

Lemonade With Agave Recipe Variations

  • SPARKLING AGAVE LEMONADE – Replace half of the water with sparkling water just before serving. A fun mocktail for kids (and the whole family, really)!
  • ROSEMARY AGAVE LEMONADE – Stir in a small amount of Rosemary Simple Syrup for a subtle herbal twist. You can cut back on the agave in the lemonade recipe a bit, since you’re adding the syrup, but please note that this syrup IS made with refined sugar.
  • SPIKED AGAVE LEMONADE – Add tequila for an easy summer cocktail situation.
  • AGAVE ARNOLD PALMER – Combine this lemonade with iced tea for the most refreshing drink for a hot summer’s day.

Storage

  • Refrigerate: Store lemonade in a covered pitcher or airtight container in the refrigerator up to 1 week.
  • Freeze: Freezing is not recommended. The fresh citrus flavor can taste dull after thawing, and this drink is so quick to stir together that it is better made fresh.
